It’s a double Derby weekend! Louisiana has one, New Mexico has one and in just over a month, Kentucky has the Derby to top all derbies! We are really entering the final stretch as two of the last 10 KY Derby prep races take place this weekend. Derby, Derby, everywhere a Derby!

Top o’ the morning to ya! Happy St. Patrick’s Day. For this holiday, Horseradish, Thoroughbred U’s regular chef, we will be keeping it easy and making reubens. I love a good reuben and I eat them regularly at Keeneland racecourse and at a variety of Irish themed bars. Many restaurants add it to their menu for celebrating St. Patrick’s Day. The sandwich isn’t in fact Irish, it’s all American but it’s all good and a fun and easy way to celebrate the day. Turn on the television and watch 2 Kentucky Derby prep races and some March Madness Basketball with a reuben, chips and a green frosty beverage. Horseradish will show you how it is done.

Good morning racing fans! It is an especially early morning for those of you switching to daylight saving time, like myself. I consider it another sign of spring, which I welcome with open arms. I am ready for longer evenings, warmer weather, Saint Patrick’s Day and just a dozen more prep races until the Kentucky Derby. Everything is coming up roses!

The action and the interest in the Kentucky Derby is really heating up! There are so many news stories and blog posts on the upcoming Fountain of Youth stakes race it is hard to find the time to take it all in. At Thoroughbred U, I could not be happier to find that there is a wealth of information pouring in. If you are short on time, this should be a helpful source for the need to know material.

As the Road to the Kentucky Derby winds its way through Europe this week I’m taking a moment to evaluate the top of the leaderboard to look for patterns and new talent. I must say, I am overjoyed to have trainer D. Wayne Lukas, with Bravazo and Sporting Chance, back in the running. Also, I am struck by the presence of second-crop sires Poseidon’s Warrior, Violence and Graydar. It is refreshing to see the new breath of young sire power blowing into Thoroughbred racing. Graydar is the leading second-crop sire in North America by winners. Watch out for his offspring in the Kentucky Derby and other Classic races.

When the clock strikes midnight on New Year’s Eve, all of the Northern Hemisphere Thoroughbreds celebrate the same birthday, each aging 1 year. These upcoming 3 year-olds are full of budding talent and well on their way down “The Road to the Kentucky Derby.”

What a week it has been. Since my last post I have attended Thoroughbred sales at both Fasig-Tipton and Keeneland and live racing at Churchill Downs. I have witnessed the sale of champions like Tepin, Stellar Wind, Catch A Glimpse and Songbird, seen the weanling foals of sires like American Pharoah and Medaglia d’ Oro and enjoyed racing at the home of the Kentucky Derby. A common thread at the auctions and the track are the impressive and primarily female offspring of the late Scat Daddy.
While preparing for the yearling sales this season I had the nice fortune of visiting five Kentucky Thoroughbred farms in just one day. A few farms were new to me and others were more familiar. One farm I had visited before was Gainesway Farm in Lexington, KY. I have been on their stallion tour and stood in awe of the beautiful and great Tapit. Stallion tours are quite popular and I truly enjoy them but there is so much else going on at the horse farms. This time I saw another part of the expansive Gainesway Farm including one of several Thoroughbred graveyards.

I won’t be home for the holiday as I will be laboring on Labor Day. Despite that, there is hope for the holiday, the Hopeful Stakes to be exact. As Saratoga winds down, the nation’s 2 year-old Thoroughbreds are racing forward.
