Yearling sale season has begun!  The 1 year-olds of the choicest stallions are now available at auction.  Fasig-Tipton held its Selected Yearlings: The July Sale yesterday 7/10/18 in Lexington, KY.  The results were positive and it should be quite a year for yearling sales.

The average price per yearling was over $100,000 yesterday versus around $93,000 last year.  The median price was $75,000 versus $70,000 the prior year.  The sale generated more than $19.7 million dollars in sales as compared to over $16.1 million in 2017.

Some horses scratched pre-sale, others did not meet the reserve.  The reserve is the minimum price set by the buyer.  RNA is short for reserve not attained and 30.7% of the yearlings cataloged did not meet their reserve.

Two yearlings were from American Pharoah’s first crop and held a lot of anticipation among those who were watching.  To my surprise, Hip 131, a filly born to Yong Musician and sired by American Pharoah failed to meet the reserve set by her consignor, Machmer Hall.  While it appeared that she hammered $245, 000 that wasn’t enough to get her sold.  In hindsight, her agent made a deal that let her go for just $200,000 to buyer JJ Crupi in a private sale shortly after she left the ring.

I was equally surprised to see the other American Pharaoh yearling strike from the sale.  Hip 205 born to Distorted Point did not make it to the sales floor.  I am not sure why she did not go through the ring.  She was to be consigned by Bluewater Sales.  I hope she sold or will sell privately.

Other sires’ yearlings sold very well.  24 horses sold for $200,000 or more when in 2017 only 18 could boast this price.  Here are the sires corresponding with the top yearlings of the sale by price:

  • $200K – Shanghai Booby, Shackleford, Distorted Humor, American Pharoah
  • $205K -Midshipman, Morning Line
  • $210K- Bayern
  • $215K- Malibu Moon
  • $220K- Munnings, Into Mischief
  • $225K- Tale Of The Cat
  • $230K- Will Take Charge
  • $250K – Palace Malice
  • $260K – Will Take Charge, Speightstown
  • $265K – Take Charge Indy
  • $275 – Palace Malice
  • $300K- Into Mischief – twice!
  • $350K- Street Sense
  • $370K –Violence
  • $435K- Strong Mandate
  • $520K- Flatter

Often times at the sale, the best waits for last, this time he was second from the final hip.  Hip 348, sired by Flatter was the only yearling to go for more than 1/2 a million dollars.  Most yearlings don’t have a name but Silvertonguedevil does.  His dam is No Curfew and he was bred and sold by Jane Lyon of Summer Wind Farm, consigned by Lane’s End and sold to Al Rashid Stable.

The summer is my favorite time of the year and I thoroughly enjoyed the July Sale.  Later this week I am touring several Central KY Farms.  Please, keep following for more Thoroughbred news.
